Dale Lowe

DALE LOWE is a Regina based woodturning artist whose work is strongly

influenced by his Saskatchewan roots. Dale was raised in a prairie farm

environment and his work reflects the colors, textures and architecture of the rural and urban spaces in which he has lived. Dale is a juried professional member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council and has had his work accepted in juried exhibitions in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Dale truly enjoys the process and challenge of creating special pieces that can be enjoyed as Fine Art .

He believes that art made with wood inspires the observer to touch the pieces and engage in the intimate experience of holding finely crafted work. His pieces are in private collections in Canada, Mexico and Dubai and was given as a part of a gift to Queen Elizabeth II.

Artist's Statement

After being trained as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist and having a 37 year career as a Technical Sales Rep in the construction industry I have discovered a passion to create special works of art using wood. Starting with the detailed art of Intarsia I was continually amazed by the beautiful grain and the warm color of wood as it was shaped and sanded to create the individual pieces of the Intarsia mosaic.

During one of our annual trips to the boreal forest I discovered an area that grew quite a few birch burls and knew that they would be a very interesting and a challenging beginning into the craft of woodturning. I harvested about a dozen fairly large burls and brought them home, thus starting the quest for a wood lathe that would handle these large pieces. I knew that I wanted to create bowls and settled on a dedicated bowl lathe that fit my budget.

A very good friend mentored me in the techniques of using bowl gouges and tools and got me headed in the right direction. I have spent many hours learning the techniques of turning, hollowing and tool sharpening and look forward to the quest to find the perfect bowl.

With world class Saskatchewan turners and artists like Michael Hosaluk, Jean Marie Fogarty and Leon Lacoursiere as role models there is a lot to learn. My goals are to produce individual pieces that have pleasing shapes, delicate balance

and a professional finish. I want to inspire the potential customer or collector to pick up my pieces and feel the warmth and soft surfaces of the wood. I hope to produce pieces that are a mix of utilitarian and art, to be used daily for salads, fruit, popcorn and candy as well as pieces that are one of a kind for office and home décor as well as special gifts for all occasions.

Thank you for your interest in my work.
